logoAt Citrix Synergy Barcelona 2012 project Excalibur was announced and I want to point out some important things you should know about, aka project Excalibur.

The technical preview is available at November first 2012 and download will be through

Important facts

  • Excalibur is based on XenDesktop 5.x and uses FMA (FlexCast Management Architecture) instead of XenApp IMA (Independent Management Architecture).
  • FMA only supports the Controller- Worker model and therefore you need at least two controllers for high availability
  • Excalibur is the FIRST release that supports Microsoft Server 2012, do NOT install XenApp 6.5 on Windows Server 2012!
  • NOT supported as multi-session (RDS) hosts are Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 R1
  • Citrix XenApp 6.5 will get Feature Pack(s) updates in the future and therefore a long life time. At the moment without Feature Pack End-of-Life (EOF) is year 2016
  • In the first release, most likely around Q1/Q2 2013, some feature will NOT be available with Excalibur like session linger and session pre-launch.
  • With Excalibur release, Citrix StoreFront is installed by default and Web Interface will NOT be supported but might (yes it does) work with the first release.
  • Licensing will most likely still separate for and but managed through the same UI.
  • Configuration logging is enabled by default and profile managment (incl. folder redirection) is integrated in Desktop studio
  • EdgeSight is fully "backed" into the product and accessed through Director. There will be different feature sets of the monitoring depending on the used license.
  • Citrix HDX Monitor is part of the EdgeSight integration
  • Excalibur supports Machine Creation Service (MCS) for based on 2008 R2 or Server 2012
  • Only supported way of shadowing is through Microsoft Remote Assist launched out of Director

Stay tuned for a "how to get started with Excalibur" from René Vester and myself.
